What therapy can focus on
Angela's work focuses on managing the difficulties that get in the way of daily life, such as anxiety, emotional dysregulation, behaviour, self-esteem and relationships, and on helping parents understand and respond to their child's needs.
How CBT can be adapted
For autistic children and young people with anxiety, NICE guidance in the UK suggests considering CBT adapted in ways such as:
- Emotion recognition training
- More written and visual information, with structured worksheets
- A more concrete and structured approach, with simplified activities
- Involving a parent or carer to support the work
- Regular breaks to help maintain attention
Support for parents
Angela works with parents through psychoeducation, parenting skills training and guidance aimed at strengthening the parent-child relationship, improving communication and managing behavioural and emotional difficulties.
